The Annual Island Schools Special Olympics Will Take Place May 7th

Come see some very special athletes compete. On May 7th, 2024, athletes from Gulf Shores City Schools and Orange Beach City Schools will come together for the second annual Island Schools Special Olympics at the Orange Beach Sportsplex. This event celebrates unity, determination, and the joy of competition for athletes of all abilities.


Superintendent Randy Wilkes expressed gratitude to the teachers, faculty, and staff who worked tirelessly to organize the event. Their dedication helped instill a deep appreciation for the talents of all participants, making the Special Olympics a rewarding and unforgettable experience.


The Island Schools Special Olympics will showcase the talents of student athletes in a supportive and inclusive setting. Beyond athletic feats, the event promotes acceptance and understanding within the community. Sports have the power to transcend barriers and bring people together.


The Opening Ceremony will kick off at 9:30 am on May 7th at the Orange Beach Sportsplex, located at 4385 William Silvers Parkway. The community is invited to attend and support the athletes as they compete and celebrate their achievements.

Special Olympics is a global movement of people creating a new world of inclusion and community, regardless of ability or disability. The Special Olympics movement represents 3.9 million athletes in 227 national and state Programs operating in 177 countries and jurisdictions that hosts in 46,000 annual competitions. There are more than 5 competitions happening every hour across the globe!

Gulf Shores area news

The Gulfarium CARE Center will be releasing several rehabilitated sea turtles back into the Gulf of Mexico on Wednesday, May 15th, at Perdido Key Public Beach Access #4. The event will begin at 11am and is expected to last about 10–15 minutes, weather permitting. In the case of inclement weather, such as storms or lightning, the release will be rescheduled.

The Gulf Shores High School Boys Soccer Team won the State Championship and it is time to celebrate. Superintendent Matt Akin announced to the City Council that the celebration would take place on Wednesday the 15th at LuLu's in Gulf Shores. The festivities will begin at 6 PM.

The Juniper Street extension is now open providing a new route for north-south traffic through south Foley from U.S. 98 to Alabama 59. The new road joins Alabama 59 at the intersection of Baldwin County 20 South. The extension will improve access in an area where more commercial development is taking place.
