Gulf Shores Cold Weather

While snow is currently not in the Alabama coastal forecast, frigid and freezing temperatures are expected to start Friday evening. The National Weather Service in Mobile has declared an "Extreme Cold Watch" and does not forecast a low temp above 32° until Monday. The agency has also posted "Bitter Cold Temperatures and wind chills are expected this weekend. Temperatures dropping to record levels and wind chills in the single digits possible Friday and Saturday nights."

Protect Plumbing and Water Systems

  • Insulate Exposed Pipes: Wrap pipes in crawl spaces, attics, and exterior walls with foam sleeves or Heat Tape.
  • Manage Outdoor Faucets: Disconnect hoses, drain water from the line, and install Insulated Faucet Covers on all exterior spigots.
  • Maintain Minimum Heat: Keep your thermostat set to at least 55°F (13°C) even when unoccupied to prevent interior pipes from freezing.
  • Circulate Air: Open cabinet doors under sinks to allow warmer room air to reach the plumbing.
  • Winterize Irrigation: Shut off and blow out irrigation systems to prevent underground pipes from bursting.

According to marina guides, to protect outboard boat motors in cold temperatures, the most critical step is storing the motor in a full vertical (down) position to allow all water to drain, preventing cracked blocks from frozen, trapped water. A key item may include flushing the cooling system with antifreeze.

For those with water service on a pier or landing, considering protect the line from a freeze burst.

We strongly suggest staying up to date with the National Weather Service for current Conditions.

Event Cancellations:

The Order of Raskalz Elberta Mardi Gras Parade scheduled for January 31st at noon has already been cancelled. According to the group's Facebook page post "We explored every possible option to reschedule, but with such a short timeline, it simply isn’t realistic. With 44 parade entries, nearly 100 walkers, hundreds of riders, and countless spectators, the safety of our community must come first."

The Gumbo and Alabama Slammer Festival in Foley has been rescheduled for February 7th & 8th. Tickets and vendor / sponsor fees for those who cannot attend on the new dates will be refunded.
