Protect Plumbing and Water Systems
- Insulate Exposed Pipes: Wrap pipes in crawl spaces, attics, and exterior walls with foam sleeves or Heat Tape.
- Manage Outdoor Faucets: Disconnect hoses, drain water from the line, and install Insulated Faucet Covers on all exterior spigots.
- Maintain Minimum Heat: Keep your thermostat set to at least 55°F (13°C) even when unoccupied to prevent interior pipes from freezing.
- Circulate Air: Open cabinet doors under sinks to allow warmer room air to reach the plumbing.
- Winterize Irrigation: Shut off and blow out irrigation systems to prevent underground pipes from bursting.
According to marina guides, to protect outboard boat motors in cold temperatures, the most critical step is storing the motor in a full vertical (down) position to allow all water to drain, preventing cracked blocks from frozen, trapped water. A key item may include flushing the cooling system with antifreeze.
For those with water service on a pier or landing, considering protect the line from a freeze burst.
We strongly suggest staying up to date with the National Weather Service for current Conditions.
