A cherished local end of season tradition

Alabama Coastal Cleanup

It is often said that to be considered a local in the community, the honor is bestowed based on how you contribute time and not about how long you have lived in the area. One of the most cherished events in the area is the Alabama Coastal Cleanup.

The Gulf Coast is preparing for the 38th Annual Alabama Coastal Cleanup, the state’s largest volunteer environmental event. Residents and visitors are encouraged to help remove litter from neighborhoods, local parks, streets, beaches, and storm drains to protect area waterways. Organizers note that debris carried through storm drains and rivers can eventually reach Mobile Bay and the Gulf.

The cleanup will take place on Saturday, September 20, from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m., with multiple volunteer sites across the region.

Coordinated through the Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources and the nonprofit Alabama People Against a Littered State (PALS), the event has involved thousands of volunteers since its start in 1987. Over the years, millions of pounds of trash have been removed from Alabama’s shores, marshes, and waterways. Commonly collected items include beverage bottles, cigarette butts, and abandoned fishing gear.

Organizers recommend that participants wear comfortable clothing, sunscreen, and sturdy footwear. Gloves and trash bags will be provided at each site. The cleanup is open to volunteers of all ages, though minors must be accompanied by an adult. Those unable to attend in here on the Gulf Coast can join other cleanup efforts in Baldwin and Mobile counties.

For additional details or to locate more cleanup zones, visit the
Alabama Coastal Cleanup website or call 251-621-1216.
