News Staff • November 11, 2023

The first playoff game was against Beauregard Hornets

The undefeated Gulf Shores Dolphins started their 5A Championship run on Friday in a home game against the Beauregard Hornets from Opelika. The 6 - 4 Hornets were the visitors to a rainy night at the "Mick." The evening was also Coach Hudspeth’s birthday so the Dolphins were excited to provide him a present to commemorate the day.

The rain did not stop the Dolphins from scoring early in the first quarter on a 20 yard rushing TD. In the 2nd quarter the Gulf Shores Dolphins drove the ball down for another ground-game score by Ronnie Royal and successful PAT by Will Langston.

Already trailing 14-0, the Hornets were unsuccessful in their first drive of the 2nd quarter. After to punting to the Dolphins, Gulf Shores had another drive resulting in a TD by Kolin Wilson making the score 21-0 after the PAT.

The defense held the Hornets on the soggy field conditions. Beauregard could not even get a first down until late in the 2nd quarter.

Just before the half QB Jud Harris completed a touchdown pass to Braden Jackson. After Langston's PAT the score was 28 - 0.

After half-time Will Langston kicked off to the Hornets. The Dolphins defense again held and forced a punt. GSHS then marched down the field and Kolin Wilson scored following a block by Tyler Burkett. The PAT was missed and the game score was 34-0.

Gulf Shores defense held the Hornets to another 3 and out. Beauregard held the Dolphins for the first time in the game and forced a punt. Michael Garrett and the defense made the Hornets pay and forced a another punt back to Gulf Shores

Once the Dolphins touched the ball, Ronnie Royal returned the punt for a touchdown and Will Langston made the PAT. The score was now 41-0.

The 4th quarter started with the ball in the hands of scoreless Beauregard. Otto Brewer stopped their progress with a sack. The Hornets again punted to Gulf Shores' Royal.

The Dolphins kept the ball mostly on the ground for the next drive resulting in a score by #6 Wilson. The PAT was again good and the score was 48-0.

The Hornets made a valiant effort in the 4th quarter scoring a late touchdown with three minutes left in the game. This was Beauregard's only score of the game. After recovering an online kick, the Dolphins finished the game by practicing good time and ball management. The Gulf Shores Dolphins won with a 48-7 score.

Next week the Gulf Shores Dolphins will face the (8-3) Charles Henderson Trojans from Troy, AL. The game will be played in Gulf Shores.

If you are not able to make the game in person you can hear the game on Sunny 105.7 with Mark Swalley and David DeJean calling the game live. Mark's play-by play and Coach's insight/ commentary are fantastic, even if your listening while at the game!

Tracking fish with sonar has been available to the public since 1948, when the famous Furuno brothers introduced the product in their native Japan. A 'salty' charter captain might add that it was Lowrance that brought it to the U.S. fishing market. But whomever you credit, NOAA has now combined it with artificial intelligence (AI) to provide better chart mapping and even fish count locations of fish in the gulf. The results could impact local fishing seasons in the future.

It’s Saturday morning, the second day of the 6A Section 1 Track Meet at Saraland High School. Coach Brewer has piloted the Dolphins bus to this place several times this season, but today a thick, milky fog has engulfed the panorama, limiting the vision of what’s ahead, save for head coach Jason Hill. He’s studied today’s upcoming events and is hopeful for the upset.
