Coastal beach towns have seen a surge in golf cart usage

An update to the city's golf cart ordinance is on the agenda for tonight’s Gulf Shores City Council meeting. The proposed amendment would expand the number of public streets where golf carts are allowed. Officials say the goal is to enhance neighborhood connectivity while prioritizing public safety. However, the ordinance makes it clear that residents use golf carts on city streets at their own risk.

The ordinance would add 15 new streets across neighborhoods in Gulf Pines to the list of Designated Cart Streets. Golf carts must display a city-issued permit sticker and may only be operated between sunrise and 10 p.m. by licensed drivers age 18 or older. Operators must also carry liability insurance and adhere to all applicable traffic laws.

The meeting is scheduled for this evening, June 23, 2025, at 4 p.m. at Gulf Shores City Hall.

In addition to the golf cart ordinance, the council will consider the following agenda items:

  • Public Recognition
  • Lifeguard of the Month awards: April – Jake Heintzelman; May – Sarah Hadder
  • Proclamation declaring July as Parks and Recreation Month

  • Public Hearing
  • Ordinance to rezone 19710 36th Avenue (Muhle property)

  • Election Business
  • Appoint City Clerk as Election Manager and Absentee Election Manager
  • Appoint and compensate 2025 election officers

  • Infrastructure and Public Services
  • Approve lease agreements with AT&T and Tilson Infrastructure for small cell towers
  • Award traffic sign bid to Vulcan, Inc.
  • Authorize a professional services agreement with Roadway Asset Services
  • Award bid for miscellaneous concrete repair to L&K Construction
  • Reject previous bid and award new contract for Sims Park tennis court resurfacing
  • Authorize acceptance of various new streets into the city’s public system
