City of Foley invites residents to discuss streetscapes

AREA NEWS OF GULF SHORES

Many cities and towns in Alabama have become a tourist destination due to their focus on streetscapes and historic building renovations.  Those locations not only focus on their "main Street" areas, but outlying neighborhoods as well. Their are even websites like Southern Outings which are dedicated to those wishing to take day trips in the state.

As part of an effort to beautify and improve streets in Foley, planners and city officials will meet with residents to discuss improvements in several downtown locations.

Foley is conducting a streetscape study for the downtown area. As part of the study, the city will conduct street focus groups to get public input on the design and appearance of several streets in the area.

Residents and business owners on those streets are asked to come to one of a series of meetings to discuss their opinions of their streets and what they would like to see in those areas.

The city will hold six focus groups on Tuesday, Aug. 6, and Wednesday, Aug. 7, at the Foley Civic Center to discuss specific streets.

The schedule for the 45-minute meetings will be:

Tuesday, Aug. 6th:

  • West Myrtle Avenue, 3:30 p.m. - 4:15 p.m.
  • West Verbena Avenue, 4:30 p.m. - 5:15 p.m.
  • South Chicago Street, from West Laurel Avenue to Myrtle Street, 5:30 p.m. - 6:15 p.m.

Wednesday, Aug. 7th:

  • Alston Street, from Jessamine South to Verbena, 10:30 a.m. - 11:15 a.m.
  • West Jessamine Avenue, 11:30 a.m. - 12:15 p.m.
  • West Orange Avenue, 12:30 p.m. - 1:15 p.m.

The city will also conduct an Open House on Friday, Aug. 9 starting at 10:30 a.m. to discuss and share the results of the focus groups.
