Gulf Shores, Ala. — (GSN) — Gulf Shores recently hosted the Southeast Regional Lifeguard Competition, a major event that showcased the impressive skills of both local junior and adult lifeguards. Team from other beach communities shared in experiencing Gulf Shores and the hospitality. The Hangout was the command center for the event.

In a historic milestone for the area, the Gulf Shores Beach Safety Division introduced junior lifeguards to the competition circuit for the first time. Guided by instructors Kylan Winter, Lieutenant Kim Lee, and Chief Joyson Phillips, the team of seven—Berkeley Lewis, Penelope Key, Elizabeth Key, Brooklyn Key, Natalie Haskin, Amelia, and Joseph Campbell—performed exceptionally well. Competing against 45 others, they secured 32 total awards, including 15 first-place finishes, potentially qualifying them for the national competition in Fort Lauderdale. This achievement is a testament to the dedication of the participants and the ongoing support from their parents, who facilitate training and encourage the youth.

The adult division also saw strong representation, with five local guards placing in the top 20 among 150 competitors. Lieutenant Lee finished seventh overall in the men's open category, while Kylan Winners earned a third-place finish in the women's category. Other recognized participants included Adam Foley, Sarah, Ellie, and Will.

The event was highly praised by representatives from the United States Lifesaving Association (USLA), who noted it was the best-run competition they have attended in 40 years. Despite a busy June schedule, the event succeeded thanks to support from the local community, The Hangout, and the public works department. Due to this success, the city is exploring the possibility of hosting future national events, with discussions even touching on World Games and potential ESPN involvement.

The department’s excellence extends to day-to-day operations, as highlighted by the recognition of Ellie Flag as the lifeguard of the month for June 2026. A third-year lifeguard and Auburn University microbiology student, Flag recorded 365 public contacts, responded to 60 calls, performed two rescues, and completed 357 preventative actions during the month. Under the leadership of Chief Phillips, this high-level culture remains consistent with the standards upheld across all city departments. Beyond their competitive achievements, these lifeguards remain dedicated to their primary beach safety duties and the training of younger staff members.
