Labor Day weekend will bring some changes to city services and schedules in Orange Beach, Gulf Shores, and Foley. While city offices will close in observance of the holiday on Monday, September 2, 2024, essential services will continue operating to ensure public safety and health. Residents are encouraged to take note of modifications to sanitation collection, facility hours, and other city operations to plan accordingly.


Below are details of closures and schedule changes for each city…


Gulf Shores, Ala.

  • In honor of Labor Day, the City of Gulf Shores will have the following facility closures and changes to regular hours of operation:
  • Gulf Shores Police Department, Gulf Shores Fire Rescue, and other emergency services will remain open to ensure public safety and health.
  • Administrative offices for the City of Gulf Shores will be closed on Monday, September 2. Regular operations will resume on Tuesday, September 3, at 8 a.m.
  • The Thomas B. Norton Public Library will be closed from Saturday, August 31, through Monday, September 2. Regular operation hours will resume on Tuesday, September 3.
  • The Gulf Shores Museum will be closed from Saturday, August 31, through Monday, September 2. Regular operation hours will resume on Tuesday, September 3.
  • The Bodenhamer Recreation Center will remain open on Monday, September 2, however, no fitness or water aerobics classes will be held. Classes will resume on Tuesday, September 3.
  • The Cultural Center will be closed on Monday, September 2. Regular operations will resume on Tuesday, September 3.
  • The George C. Meyer Tennis Center will be closed on Monday, September 2. Courts will be open and available for public use. Regular operation hours will resume on Tuesday, September 3.
  • The pickleball courts located at the Gulf Shores Sportsplex will remain open and available for public use.
  • The Gulf Shores City Store will be closed on Monday, September 2. Regular operations will resume on Tuesday, September 3.
  • Republic Services Garbage and Recycling Services will run as scheduled. Yard debris/bulky pickup will run as expected.
  • The City Council Work Session Meeting will take place on Tuesday, September 3, at 4 p.m.

Orange Beach, Ala.

  • City offices closed Monday, Sept. 2 for Labor Day 2024
  • In observance of Labor Day, non-essential City of Orange Beach offices will be closed on Monday, September 2, 2024. One exception is the Orange Beach Golf Center, which will be open all day. 
  • Offices will open, with normal hours, on Tuesday, September 3rd.
  • Trash and recycling will not be affected. All routes will run as normal.


Foley, Ala.

  • The schedule for some Foley sanitation collection services will be modified due to the Labor Day holiday.
  • All city offices, including the Public Works Department, will be closed on Monday, Sept. 2, for the holiday. Offices will reopen Tuesday.
  • Recycling collections usually scheduled for Mondays will be collected on Tuesday, Sept. 3. The pickup schedule for the rest of the week will not be affected.
  • The collection of limbs, yard debris and bulk items will resume Tuesday where pickup left off the previous week. Residents are asked to be patient since some collections may be delayed until crews catch up with the pickups.
  • Garbage collection services are not expected to be affected by the holiday.
  • All routes begin at 6 a.m.
  • Hot shot service is also limited on holiday weeks. Residents are asked to have items out on time.

Tracking fish with sonar has been available to the public since 1948, when the famous Furuno brothers introduced the product in their native Japan. A 'salty' charter captain might add that it was Lowrance that brought it to the U.S. fishing market. But whomever you credit, NOAA has now combined it with artificial intelligence (AI) to provide better chart mapping and even fish count locations of fish in the gulf. The results could impact local fishing seasons in the future.

It’s Saturday morning, the second day of the 6A Section 1 Track Meet at Saraland High School. Coach Brewer has piloted the Dolphins bus to this place several times this season, but today a thick, milky fog has engulfed the panorama, limiting the vision of what’s ahead, save for head coach Jason Hill. He’s studied today’s upcoming events and is hopeful for the upset.

A decorated urn containing human ashes washed up on Gulf Shores beach this past week, starting a mystery that local police have now solved. The container was discovered by people walking along the shore on West Beach on April 17. The urn had no name or identification on the outside.
