Very fitting drink for current weather temperatures

Gulf Shores Restaurant News

Winter isn’t coming. It’s already here. Ouch. Thankfully, weathering the cold in typically balmy Baldwin County is a lot easier on January 17th because of a cozy cocktail that warms you from the inside out.

The roots of Hot Buttered Rum trace back to colonial America where early settlers adopted the beverage as a remedy for the harsh winter weather. Sailors and seafarers also embraced the comforting drink, believing it could stave off the cold during their maritime journeys. (The jury’s still out on whether this was the inspiration for the song, “Yo Ho Ho and a Bottle of Rum”.)

It’s a simple, yet indulgent recipe beginning with a base of dark rum. A pat of butter is added along with brown sugar or honey as a sweetener. But the real magic happens with the addition of warm spices like cinnamon, nutmeg, and cloves to create a rich and aromatic concoction which is then topped with hot water or cider.

Modern mixologists and home enthusiasts have taken Hot Buttered Rum to new heights with creative variations. Some opt for a spiced-infused rum or experiment with different types of sweeteners, while others add unexpected flavors like vanilla, orange zest, or even a hint of chocolate. And you should definitely consider pairing your drink with warm spiced cookies or a slice of pumpkin spice cake.

Celebrate National Hot Buttered Rum Day at one of these warm and cozy local drinking establishments. If you’re really brave, outdoor seating is available.

Tracking fish with sonar has been available to the public since 1948, when the famous Furuno brothers introduced the product in their native Japan. A 'salty' charter captain might add that it was Lowrance that brought it to the U.S. fishing market. But whomever you credit, NOAA has now combined it with artificial intelligence (AI) to provide better chart mapping and even fish count locations of fish in the gulf. The results could impact local fishing seasons in the future.

He’s studied today’s upcoming events and is hopeful for the upset.
