Vote: USA TODAY’s 10Best Best Recreational Trail

Gulf Shores Backcountry Trail

The Hugh S. Branyon Backcountry Trail is once again in the running for a national title, earning another nomination for USA TODAY’s 10Best Best Recreational Trail. Local leaders and trail users hope to maintain a winning streak. The 10Best awards are determined by online voting. Supporters can cast one ballot per day.

Voting is open now through Monday, April 6, 2026, at 10:59 a.m. CST. Ballots are accepted on the
USA TODAY 10Best website at the Backcountry Trail’s award page. Results are expected to be announced later in April.

The Backcountry Trail is no stranger to national recognition. It was named USA TODAY 10Best’s Best Recreational Trail in 2023, 2024, and 2025, earning the Gulf Coast destination three consecutive national titles. Tourism officials say these wins have attracted more visitors to Gulf Shores, Orange Beach, and Gulf State Park.

Stretching more than 28 miles, the multi-use network connects the cities of Gulf Shores and Orange Beach through Gulf State Park. The system combines 26 individual trails and passes through nine distinct ecosystems, from coastal dunes and wetlands to pine forests and marshes.

The paved, ADA-accessible paths are open to walkers, runners, and cyclists, providing residents and visitors a safe way to explore the park. Along the route, users may see alligators, deer, bobcats, turtles, and various coastal birds. Benches, trailheads, and rest areas make it easier for families and casual visitors to enjoy shorter outings.

Local and state officials credit the trail’s design and setting for its national success. They note that the route provides recreation and emphasize the importance of preserving coastal habitats. Community partners in Gulf Shores and Orange Beach have promoted the trail as a year-round attraction.

Supporters say another USA TODAY 10Best win would maintain that momentum. They hope that consistent daily voting will help push the Backcountry Trail back to the top of the national list. Voters can learn more and find the ballot at the 10Best website’s Best Recreational Trail section.
