Polar Bear Dips and Parties to Welcome the New Year

New Year's Eve in Gulf Shores

Local outlets are reporting heavier than normal interest in New Year's Eve events and Polar Bear Dips on January 1st. Here are a few of the popular year-ending gatherings.


LULU'S

Family-friendly and rollicking fun is available to ring in the New Year on the Alabama Gulf Coast. Start it with the iconic Noon Year’s Eve at LuLu’s at Home Port Marina.

 

The fun starts at LuLu’s at 10 a.m. on Dec. 31 with a sandcastle-building contest, face painting, live music and more fun on the sandy beach. The kids get their own countdown at noon with the huge balloon drop.

 

FLORA-BAMA LOUNGE AND OYSTER BAR

The Bama is bringing back its New Year’s Eve celebration with music rocking on three stages, an all-you-can-eat buffet, party favors and a midnight champagne toast. Tickets are $75 through Dec. 24, but the price goes up to $80 Dec. 25-31. This is a 21-and-over event that usually sells out quickly. Get your tickets here.

 

FLORA-BAMA YACHT CLUB

The Yacht Club is offering a four-course meal of entrées of garlic-crusted prime rib, salmon or chicken Pontchartrain, salads or gumbo for starters and crème Brulé with fresh berries or layered chocolate moose cake. The evening will include music from Tim Roberts and tickets are $150 per person and must be purchased in tables of two, four, six, eight and a limited space to accommodate a party of 10. Single seating is available for pre-purchase.

 

FLORA-BAMA POLAR BEAR DIP

This decades-long tradition is a blast of a party after the New Year’s Eve bash. Shake off them honky tonk blues with a refreshing dip in the Gulf. It’ll earn you a beer and New Year’s Day lunch of ham, black-eyed peas, greens and cornbread.

 

PERDIDO BEACH RESORT

The beachfront resort is taking reservations for New Year’s Eve in the grand ballroom with live music and a buffet with a variety of appetizers, entrées, sides and desserts. Cost is $110 per person or $1,440 for a table of 10. This is a 21 and older event and you can buy tickets here.


COASTAL RESTAURANT NEW YEAR'S DINNER

THE WHARF

Kids Confetti Drop

Join the Kids Confetti Drop at Palms Plaza on Main Street on Dec. 31 from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. There will be a bouncy house, face painting ($10), camel rides ($10), slime battle zone, surf simulator, stilt walker and more. Confetti cannons will fire off at noon to bring in the New Year albeit a few hours early.

 

REELIN' IN THE NEW YEAR

Come to The Wharf later on New Year’s Eve for this 5 p.m.-midnight party to bring in 2024. There will be live bands, family-friendly activities, adult fun and The Park Band, marlin drop and fireworks at midnight.

 
GULF SHORES POLAR BEAR DIP AT THE HANGOUT

The fun and free hot chocolate starts at 10 a.m. with a plunge into the Gulf at the public beach at noon south of the Hangout.

Tracking fish with sonar has been available to the public since 1948, when the famous Furuno brothers introduced the product in their native Japan. A 'salty' charter captain might add that it was Lowrance that brought it to the U.S. fishing market. But whomever you credit, NOAA has now combined it with artificial intelligence (AI) to provide better chart mapping and even fish count locations of fish in the gulf. The results could impact local fishing seasons in the future.

It’s Saturday morning, the second day of the 6A Section 1 Track Meet at Saraland High School. Coach Brewer has piloted the Dolphins bus to this place several times this season, but today a thick, milky fog has engulfed the panorama, limiting the vision of what’s ahead, save for head coach Jason Hill. He’s studied today’s upcoming events and is hopeful for the upset.

A decorated urn containing human ashes washed up on Gulf Shores beach this past week, starting a mystery that local police have now solved. The container was discovered by people walking along the shore on West Beach on April 17. The urn had no name or identification on the outside.
