NOAA Finally Using New Communication Methods To Reach Anglers

News Staff • November 2, 2024

You Can Stay Informed with NOAA Alerts for Your Fishing Area

Gulf Shores Fishing News

In a move to streamline information delivery, NOAA Fisheries has announced new ways for anglers and fishing industry professionals to stay informed about regulations and management actions. Starting January 1, 2025, fishery bulletins, often called "blue sheets," will be available through three paperless options.

Digital Delivery Options

  • Email Subscriptions
Anglers can now receive color bulletins via email. These digital versions arrive faster than paper copies and include helpful links. To sign up, visit the NOAA Fisheries Southeast website. Current email subscribers don't need to take any action.

  • Text Alerts
For immediate updates, NOAA has introduced a text message alert system. Fishers can join groups for specific regions and fishery types by texting keywords to 888777. For example, "GULFRECFISH" for the Gulf of Mexico recreational alerts.

  • Traditional Mail Option
Those preferring paper copies must update their preferences by December 31, 2024. A form should be sent to NOAA's Saint Petersburg office to continue receiving mailed bulletins after this date.

Impact on Fishing Community

This change aims to provide faster, more efficient communication about fishing regulations. It allows anglers to choose how they receive important information, potentially reducing missed updates that could affect their activities.

The new system also supports environmental efforts by reducing paper use. However, NOAA recognizes that some may still prefer physical copies, hence the option to continue mail delivery.

Looking Ahead

As the fishing industry evolves, so do communication methods. This update reflects NOAA's commitment to serving the fishing community with timely, accessible information. Anglers and industry professionals are encouraged to select their preferred method before the January 1, 2025, effective date.
