The Planning Commission meeting includes key developments

news in Gulf Shores area

The next meeting of the Orange Beach Planning Commission is scheduled for Monday, December 11th, in the Council Chambers at City Hall.

The First Baptist Church of Bay Minette owns undeveloped property in the Oak Ridge Drive area of Orange Beach and will ask the Orange Beach Planning Commission for a replating of a lot north of houses along that roadway.

The entire parcel is 38 acres and valued at $550,400 according to Baldwin County tax records. It also has a narrow frontage on State Route 161 north of Dollar General. The church is also listed as the owner of two other undeveloped parcels of 19.6 acres and 27.5 acres north of the Oak Ridge subdivision and south of Canal Road and west of the parcel involved in the request.

The homes on West Oak Ridge are zoned mobile home subdivision and the church’s lot is zoned single-family residential.

In May, Matthews Development announced plans to request to divide 5.2 acres at the end of Oak Ridge Drive West, but the applicant didn’t submit the request before the deadline.

Also, on the agenda is a request for site plan approval for a 4,500-square-foot gas station/convenience on the north side of Canal Road across the street from the Keg Lounge.

During the meeting, the commission will also discuss:

  • An amendment change regarding the storage of boats, trailers, recreational vehicles and materials on vacant residential lots.
  • A planned unit development for 38 acres on Cotton Bayou north of Turquoise Place to include a seven-story building with 90 units. October Investments also seeks to build a three-story, two-unit condo building on 1.2 acres directly west of the Turquoise towers where there is currently a public beach access. The large parcel is currently listed as being owned by the city and a lawsuit by Turquoise developers is seeking to take that parcel back from the city.
  • Pandion Ridge’s request to amend its planned unit development to include a mobile home for the manager of the RV park to live in.
  • A request from James and Laralei Ammons to combine two lots on the south side of Canal Road and directly east of the Alabama Credit Union.
  • A site plan request for Emerald Coast Carpet Cleaning at 4395 Canal Square Lane or south of O’Reilly’s Auto Parts store to build a 3,600-square-foot office building.

ITEM NOT MEETING THE SECOND DEADLINE

The Wharf Landing wants to subdivide 92.6 acres of the failed Bama Bayou project into three lots. It was also deferred from the Nov. 13 meeting.

Tracking fish with sonar has been available to the public since 1948, when the famous Furuno brothers introduced the product in their native Japan. A 'salty' charter captain might add that it was Lowrance that brought it to the U.S. fishing market. But whomever you credit, NOAA has now combined it with artificial intelligence (AI) to provide better chart mapping and even fish count locations of fish in the gulf. The results could impact local fishing seasons in the future.

It’s Saturday morning, the second day of the 6A Section 1 Track Meet at Saraland High School. Coach Brewer has piloted the Dolphins bus to this place several times this season, but today a thick, milky fog has engulfed the panorama, limiting the vision of what’s ahead, save for head coach Jason Hill. He’s studied today’s upcoming events and is hopeful for the upset.
