Artistic Birdhouse Contest Offers Prizes

Orange Beach  is calling on its creative residents to help replace the worn birdhouses at the Orange Beach Golf Center. Orange Beach Parks and Recreation has announced a fun and artsy contest where participants can showcase their skills by designing decorative birdhouses.


Interested individuals must register and drop off their birdhouse creations at the Coastal Arts Center between June 10-14. Voting will take place via social media from June 17-19.


The winner, to be announced on June 20, will receive a grand prize - either a one-year membership to the Golf Center or an Orange Beach Parks & Recreation fun pack. The fun pack includes a round of golf for two, daily aquatic center passes for four, and an Orange Beach City Swag Bag.


Small prizes will also be awarded to all participants. The city encourages everyone to get involved and let their creativity soar with this unique birdhouse design contest.


  • All birdhouses must be turned in at the Coastal Arts Center the week of June 10-14.  Voting will be held June 17-19 and the winner announced on June 20.
  • We are looking for FUN, beautifully designed, decorated, painted, and creative houses.
  • Entries must have original artwork and design elements. The more creative and colorful the better!  Houses may be store-purchased, but handmade builds are preferred.
  • The maximum size for houses is 20″ x 20″. No perches or multiple holes are allowed to prevent attracting non-native birds and predation.
  • Homes must be sturdy for hanging or mounting.  Materials and paint must be able to withstand weather elements.
  • We reserve the right to disallow any submission deemed objectionable. We are not responsible for any damage or disappearance of the birdhouse.
  • Entering the contest constitutes permission to use your name and image for publicity purposes.
  • People of ALL ages are encouraged to enter.

Tracking fish with sonar has been available to the public since 1948, when the famous Furuno brothers introduced the product in their native Japan. A 'salty' charter captain might add that it was Lowrance that brought it to the U.S. fishing market. But whomever you credit, NOAA has now combined it with artificial intelligence (AI) to provide better chart mapping and even fish count locations of fish in the gulf. The results could impact local fishing seasons in the future.

It’s Saturday morning, the second day of the 6A Section 1 Track Meet at Saraland High School. Coach Brewer has piloted the Dolphins bus to this place several times this season, but today a thick, milky fog has engulfed the panorama, limiting the vision of what’s ahead, save for head coach Jason Hill. He’s studied today’s upcoming events and is hopeful for the upset.

A decorated urn containing human ashes washed up on Gulf Shores beach this past week, starting a mystery that local police have now solved. The container was discovered by people walking along the shore on West Beach on April 17. The urn had no name or identification on the outside.
