Orange Beach Declares State of Emergency

Orange Beach Declares State of Emergency

Orange Beach, Ala. — (GSN) — As Tropical Storm Isaias moves across the Gulf of Mexico toward the northern Gulf Coast, local and state officials have taken proactive steps to safeguard coastal communities, including the issuance of emergency declarations and storm watches across Baldwin and Mobile counties.

Declaring a state of emergency provides municipal and state leadership with essential administrative, legal, and operational capabilities to prepare for and respond to severe weather:

  • Resource Mobilization: It allows the city and state to pre-position equipment, emergency response personnel, and utility crews before the storm makes landfall.
  • Activation of Emergency Protocols: It formalizes operational plans, streamlining communication and multi-agency coordination between local police, fire departments, public works, and state disaster relief agencies.
  • Issuance of Public Safety Directives: It enables local leaders to issue urgent protective advisories, such as recommending voluntary evacuations for visitors and residents in low-lying, flood-prone areas to reduce traffic and clear roadways for emergency operations.
  • Access to Funding & Emergency Support: It streamlines the process for requesting regional, state, and federal disaster assistance, while expediting emergency spending and resource procurement.

Forecasters and the Alabama Emergency Management Agency have issued a Storm Surge Watch for the area. The average elevation in Orange Beach is approximately 7 feet above sea level, though some topographic maps indicate it can range between 7 and 13 feet.

  • Predicted Surge Height: Peak storm surge levels are forecasted to reach 5 to 7 feet above normally dry ground along the coast and Mobile Bay.
  • Additional Hazards: Along with storm surge flooding, the storm system is expected to bring heavy rainfall totaling 2 to 6 inches (with isolated higher amounts) and sustained tropical storm to hurricane-force winds.

Local emergency managers strongly advise residents and visitors to monitor updates from the National Weather Service, secure outdoor property, and follow official directives. For reliable coverage and live updates, Gulf Shores News has linked all hurricane information and storm tracking directly to the National Hurricane Center to ensure the community receives the most accurate and timely information.
