Orange Beach Bridge Accident

Orange Beach, Ala. — (GSN) —  The Perdido Pass Bridge has long been feared for its high, arching curve and the narrow median separating opposing traffic. This, coupled with its stunning views, it is easy to see why drivers must remain focused when crossing the legendary span.

Orange Beach first responders answered a serious crash call at Perdido Pass Bridge on Sunday afternoon. Firefighters and police officers found two damaged vehicles. One vehicle was lodged between the Jersey barriers and the chain-link fence that borders the pedestrian path. Crews safely worked to remove the occupants.

At about 1:15 p.m. on Sunday, May 31, responders were dispatched to the Perdido Pass Bridge. When they arrived, fire and police personnel found two vehicles involved in the accident at the top of the span. One vehicle was traveling westbound when it crossed the median and struck an eastbound vehicle.

The vehicle that crossed the median went over the Jersey barrier, but the chain-link fence prevented the vehicle from falling about 50+ feet into Perdido Pass. First responders safely removed the occupants of the vehicles during the rescue.

After the occupants were removed, emergency crews began sending patients to hospitals. One patient was transported by MedStar AirCare. Another patient was transported by Orange Beach Fire. Both were taken to area hospitals.

Two additional patients refused ambulance transport at the scene. No other information about their conditions has been released. Authorities did not say how many people were involved in the accident.

Orange Beach first responders included fire and police personnel who handled the initial response on the bridge. The rescue and transport happened after crews assessed both vehicles and the patients found at the scene.

Law enforcement also made an arrest in connection with the wreck. One person was arrested for Driving Under the Influence. The release did not identify the person who was taken into custody.

Officials have not released a cause for the crash itself. The only charge announced was Driving Under the Influence. The investigation was still pending as of the information provided in the statement.
