Gulf Shores Airport Expansion Begins

Gulf Shores Airport Expansion

Gulf Shores, Ala. — (GSN) — The Gulf Shores International Airport (GUF/JKA) has officially broken ground on a $15 million terminal expansion project, a significant development driven by record-setting passenger growth. The initiative, awarded to TripTek Construction LLC, aims to complete the new terminal concourse in time for the summer 2027 flight schedule.

The expansion comes on the heels of a historic June for the airport, which saw over 34,000 passengers—the highest monthly volume since airline service began in May 2025. Additionally, the airport maintained a 78% average load factor across thirteen destinations during that period.

Key highlights of the expansion project include:

  • Federal Funding: The project is supported by a $2 million FAA Airport Terminal Program grant from the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act (IIJA), which prioritizes projects designed to improve the traveler experience.
  • New Amenities: Travelers can look forward to expanded food, beverage, and retail options, a dedicated mothers' nursing area, and a new outdoor patio.
  • Commitment to Community: Airport Director Jesse Fosnaugh emphasized that while growth is necessary, the airport remains dedicated to maintaining a "small-community" atmosphere. "Even though we are growing, we will keep the airport experience quick, easy, inexpensive, and cheerful," Fosnaugh noted.

The airport is collaborating closely with its airline partner, Allegiant, to ensure the expansion supports better route scheduling and necessary infrastructure improvements.

While construction is underway in the terminal and adjacent parking facilities, the airport continues to operate. Airport leadership has expressed appreciation for public patience during this transition, emphasizing that the improvements are ultimately aimed at serving passengers more effectively.
