Man Drowns In Fort Morgan While Trying To Save Son

Fort Morgan currents create hazards for even experienced swimmers

Fort Morgan, Ala. – (GSN) – On a week to celebrate fathers, one has lost his life trying to save his child. Fort Morgan Fire Rescue responded to a drowning on Wednesday. Dispatchers received the call at 4:56 p.m. in the area of Vacation Lane and Ponce Del Leon Court.


Fire chief Lee Steiner said a man was trying to save his son from a rip current when he went under. Fort Morgan was flying double-red flags, and the water was closed.


"We are thankful for the Baldwin County Sheriff's Office who had deputies on the beach," Steiner said. "The Fort Morgan guys were on the beach patrolling all day long and telling people to get out of the water."


Steiner said it is essential for beachgoers to pay attention to the county's flag warning system. At the time of the drowning, the sun was out, but Steiner said clear skies do not mean the water is safe.

"When in doubt, stay out of the water," he said.


Fort Morgan has over 20,000 visitors a day during the peak summer months.
