Monday, September 14th- Most modern cultures have at least heard of the art of crocheting; however, long before it made its mainstream debut in the 16th century through European lacemaking, people worldwide used ancient methods to create looped stitches. Some of the earliest influences came from India and Iran, with the making of traditional rash dooji, where small hooks and foundational chain-stitch mechanics were used. Over time, the distinctive technique helped crochet evolve into a separate craft from other needlework, forming its own fabric creation practice, originally called "shepherd’s knitting.” Today, it remains a unique art, yet accessible to the everyday creative. This is great news for anyone along the Gulf Coast seeking a fun way to spend their Monday, meet new people, and learn something with deep ancient roots. Friday, September 18th- Poetry is a beautiful and rhythmic form of expression that touches our hearts, ignites our thoughts, and creates vivid sensory experiences. In ancient times, people used it not only to help others learn through rhythmic repetition but also to preserve family histories, recount life events, teach laws, and tell stories of the past. One of the earliest recognized and preserved poems is the Epic of Gilgamesh. Later, during the classical era, works from ancient Greece like The Iliad and The Odyssey emerged, shaping the storytelling traditions that influence Western literature even today. Whether you're a budding writer, a poetry lover, or simply curious, you're invited to join in at the Gulf Shores Library this Friday evening for the "Poetry Reading Open Mic.” It’s a relaxed, welcoming night where local poets will share original pieces, favorite poems or simply enjoy listening and soaking in the poetic atmosphere. Saturday, September 19th- This Saturday on the Alabama Gulf Coast is packed with activities, starting with the 39th Annual Alabama Coastal Cleanup — an exciting opportunity to make a difference. Kick off your morning at 8 AM and join the state's largest volunteer event. Whether you’re part of an organization or flying solo with a friend, you can help restore our beautiful coast until noon. Use the link below to find your designated zone—neighborhoods, parks, streets, or storm drains—and join a local cleanup team. Remember, trash travels through storm drains, streams, and rivers, eventually ending up on the beaches, in the bays, and in the Gulf. Picking it up early protects our waters and the creatures that call it home. Also, this Saturday, get ready for the 10th Annual Miss Shrimp Festival Pageant at the Erie Meyer Civic Center! Open to contestants aged 4-18 who are Baldwin County residents, this event offers more than just a beauty-and-beyond contest. The Miss Division winner will receive a $500 scholarship and an amazing prize package. Plus, all the courts and queens will be crowned at the Shrimp Festival on October 10th at 10 AM, making it a day full of excitement that carries on until Shrimp Fest weekend!

Sunday, September 20th- Experience the thrill of freedom at the 6th Annual Freedom Fest, located at The Wharf in Orange Beach this Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Join others for the Bama Coast Cruisin' fall car show, as Main Street is shut down to traffic to make way for vendors showcasing arts, crafts, outdoor booths, and a patriotic military display. Enjoy a variety of food vendors on the west side of The Wharf. A Kids’ Zone, sponsored by the Police Benevolent Fund, will be located next to the Ferris Wheel—one of the grandest Ferris Wheels in the South—providing perfect access for families. The Bama Coast Cruisin' parade on Sunday afternoon will offer an exceptional display of antique cars, ideal for after church or lunch. Along with these special engagements and an array of vendors, the Gulf Coast Gun Collectors Association Firearms Show will take place. Celebrate with all—let freedom ring.
