The council has many items on this week's agenda that are associated with the new high school. Gulf Shores is looking to extend Volkert’s construction management contract for nine months on the new high school at a cost of about $470,000 to the project and Volkert is being paid a total of $4.8 million.

The council will meet on March 3 at 4 p.m. in council chambers at city hall.

In a memo to the council, Public Works Director Noel Hand the extension is needed to “accommodate the duration of the high school construction project.”

Other items on the new high school to be discussed at the meeting include awarding a contract to Sherer Consulting for commissioning services and controls system for the HVAC unit at the new high school for $356,000. A second item is about awarding a security system for the high school building or $475,380.

During the work session, the council will also discuss:

• Approving a liquor license for High Tide Daiquiris and Mimosas at 408 W. Beach Blvd. A public hearing on the approval will be March 10 at 4 p.m. during the regular council meeting.
• Reappointing Nora Mandoki to the Personnel Board. Her current term ends on March 27 and she has agreed to a term through March 27, 2028.
• Paying $69,118 for project management software from Procure. Broken down, it costs $45,742 for a one-year license and initial setup fees will cost $23,375.
• Adopting a fixed asset manual to provide “s information and guidelines for the
• management and accounting of government assets, including fixed assets, capital assets and properties.”
• Amend the credit line increase on authorized city credit cards from $120,000 to $150,000.
• Pay the Auburn Technical Assistance Program $33,000 “to provide training on how to improve operational processes within city departments.”
• Hiring a fire inspector was originally included in the 2025 budget but pushed forward to 2026. Fire Chief Mark Sealy said in a memo to the council the department’s needs have changed and the inspector is needed now. Starting salary is $64,598.
• Accepting a police dog donation from deceased resident Statia Moody who put in her will she’d like to donate to the police department. The estimated cost is $15,000-$19,000.
• Granting public assembly permits three tournaments including American Volleyball Coaches Association to have a small college beach volleyball championship on April 17-19 at Gulf Place. The Sun Conference Beach Volleyball championship is scheduled for April 11-12 also at Gulf Place. Lastly, the assembly permit for the return of the NCAA Beach Volleyball Championship at Gulf Place on May 2-4.
• Authorizing a 2025 F-150 pickup as part of the Laguna Cove Little Lagoon protection project funding. The $47,000 for the truck will be fully reimbursed in the Natural Resource Damage Assessment process related to the Deepwater Horizon Oil spill in 2010. The city received $6.4 million to acquire the undeveloped 53 acres with 6,100 feet of shoreline on Little Lagoon.
