Gulf Shores store nurtures talent from curb to curl

Gulf Shores Surfing

Over the past two weeks, local surfers have experienced an extended stretch of optimal wave conditions along the Gulf Coast. The surfing community, diverse in demographics yet united by a shared passion for both the anticipation and the execution of wave riding, has fostered a familial atmosphere among its members. The confluence of favorable swells, wind patterns, and tidal influence created a perfect environment allowing enthusiasts of all ages to engage in their sport to the fullest.

Among those taking advantage of the conditions were a group of local groms, a shortened form of “grommet” rooted in 1960s surfing slang that is used across the board now to describe young surfing and skating enthusiasts. The group included a mix of team riders and students from “Camp Shred” run by retired competitive pro surfer Mike Tamburello. Nearly a decade ago Tamburello, aka Tambo moved back to the Alabama Gulf Coast after spending 12 years living and surfing in California. Upon his return, he quickly noticed that the local surf culture he had cherished as a kid was on the decline. To help revive this passion, he opened his first “real surf shop” in Orange Beach. Later, he had the opportunity to move the shop to Gulf Shores ,where he transformed the interior to also accommodate local skaters by designing and implementing the area’s first-ever indoor skating bowl.

Fast forward to today, and the shop has fostered a thriving grom community that is making waves and power slides across the Gulf Coast. The shop offers camps throughout the year when groms can enhance their skills and learn from some of the best coaches in the region. Many seasoned surfers in the area will attest that winter often brings the best surf conditions, making this the perfect time for beginners or those looking to improve to join the community.

Tambo’s Surf and Skate shop has everything you need to get started, get better or just simply look the part. The shop is open seven days a week, for you to stop by and check out all the rad offerings or give them a call to sign your kiddos up for camp. Regardless of your skill level or age, lessons are available including private one-on-one sessions or group, for both skateboarding and surfing together or either one. Slide by the shop today open 12-6 PM, to pick out your wetsuit, a new board, or any board improvements, and get ready to ride!
