Redistricting triggered a special primary for districts covering Mobile, Baldwin, and Escambia counties

Orange Beach, Ala. — (GSN) — Voters in parts of Alabama are preparing for a special congressional primary election on Tuesday, Aug. 11, 2026. The election affects Congressional District 1, which includes Mobile, Baldwin, and Escambia counties. The race follows the Alabama state legislature's redrawing of Districts 1 and 7. District 7 is out of our area and includes Washington, Clarke, Monroe, and Conecuh Counties. Four Republicans are competing for the party's nomination in District 1, while the Democratic candidate is running unopposed.
The Alabama Legislature redrew Districts 1 and 7 in May 2026, triggering special elections in those districts. The special primary election is set for Aug. 11, 2026. Polls will be open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Alabama does not offer in-person early voting.
The four Republicans on the District 1 ballot are realtor Lucas Berger, former congressman Jerry Carl, retired military pilot John Mills, and Fairhope businessman Austin Sidwell. Democrat Clyde Jones is running unopposed on the District 1 ballot. Voters should check their sample ballot on the Alabama Secretary of State's website to confirm which races appear in their precinct.
Ammie Akin is running against David Perry in the Republican special election in District 7. Terri Sewell, a Democrat, is running unopposed.
Voters who are unsure of their polling place can look it up on the Alabama Secretary of State's Alabama Votes website. Voters are required to bring a valid photo ID to cast a ballot.
