Gulf Shores City Schools lead a culture of community service

Building a community of service and pride takes leadership and organization. It takes a large group who actively contribute to the well-being of the people and places around you.

Gulf Shores City Schools have announced the return of "Gulf Shores Gives Back," a community-wide service day set for February 27, 2025. This event follows last year's success, which saw over 3,000 participants completing more than 100 projects.

Superintendent Dr. Matt Akin expressed enthusiasm, stating that the event showcases the community's spirit. Assistant Superintendent Dr. Stephanie Harrison added that the day fosters a culture of giving and strengthens local connections.

The initiative, led by the Gulf Shores City Schools' Mental Health Advisory Committee, offers several ways for residents to get involved:

  1. Create Your Own Service Project: Residents and organizations are encouraged to plan and execute service projects in their neighborhoods.
  2. Sponsor School Projects: Community members can support student initiatives by providing essential supplies, such as gloves for beach cleanups and materials for gift baskets.
  3. Join a Community Project: Volunteers can sign up for various pre-organized service opportunities throughout the city via the Volunteer Sign-Up Form on the Gulf Shores City Schools website.

Students and teachers have already committed to numerous projects, including beach cleanups, park revitalization, building a sensory trail in Gulf State Park, meal deliveries to those in need, and activities at local nursing homes. Student-led initiatives continue to grow, with school counselors supporting additional project ideas from motivated students.

In case of bad weather, activities will move to the backup date of February 28, 2025. For more information, to register a project, or to sign up as a volunteer, visit the Gulf Shores City Schools
website or contact Dr. Stephanie Harrison at sharrison@gsboe.org.
