Apple's Tim Cook Talks Robertsdale

Baldwin County, Ala. — (GSN) — In a recent interview on CNBC’s "Mad Money," Apple CEO Tim Cook discussed the critical role of manufacturing in rural America, drawing on his personal upbringing in his Baldwin County hometown of Robertsdale, Alabama. The interview highlighted Apple's ongoing domestic economic efforts and sparked speculation regarding where the tech giant might position its next production facilities.

Speaking with host Jim Cramer, Cook reflected on his roots in Robertsdale, describing it as a small community of a few thousand "salt-of-the-earth" people. Coming from a blue-collar family—with a father who worked in the shipbuilding industry—Cook noted that he has seen firsthand what happens to rural communities when major employers leave.

Cook emphasized the necessity of creating a "hub" of economic activity to revitalize these areas. According to Cook, a central manufacturing plant triggers a virtuous economic cycle, stimulating local growth by generating demand for new restaurants, grocery stores, and retail shops. Apple is currently establishing these types of economic hubs across the United States, supporting production in 79 factories.

The interview also opened the door to speculation regarding Apple's future industrial footprint. Journalist Jeff Poor of 1819 News highlighted Cook's responses regarding where future Apple investments might land. When asked directly by Cramer if Apple plans to target cities with a qualified workforce that has been "left behind" by previous companies, Cook confirmed the strategy, stating, "There will definitely be different places that have those characteristics, yes".

While no specific new locations in Baldwin County or Alabama were officially announced, Cook's explicit focus on communities with underutilized workforces suggests that rural hubs mirroring his hometown profile remain a key component of Apple’s domestic manufacturing strategy.
