Alabama ranks 7th in nation for fatal accidents

Fatal Car Crashes Baldwin County

Gulf Shores, Ala. — (GSN) — One might assume that with the extra tourist traffic during summer months Baldwin County would experience their highest traffic fatality rate during that period. A report from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) shows that Baldwin County's fatal accidents occur at a consistent rate during the year.

Alabama ranked as the 7th most dangerous state in the country for percentage of fatal automobile accidents during summer. Mississippi was the worst among southern states and second in the nation.

When analyzing the NHTSA reports for the available 14 year period, Baldwin County results were consistent no matter the month. April was the safest while September was the deadliest. (See Below)

While many accidents along the beaches are due to road unfamiliarity among visitors, fatalities appear to occur more often on rural roads with poor lighting and higher rates of speed.

The recent road construction throughout Baldwin County is meant to relive congestion and provide roads with better conditions. Several major road projects and traffic pattern updates are currently active in Baldwin County, most notably the new Intracoastal Waterway Bridge one-way system in Gulf Shores and Orange Beach. ALDOT and Baldwin County administrators have stated their commitment to roads which allow for storm evacuations while maintaining safety.

Preventing fatal accidents starts with consistent defensive driving habits. Eliminate distractions like mobile devices, strictly obey speed limits, and maintain a safe following distance to allow for proper reaction time. Always drive alert and sober, and ensure every passenger is buckled up. Staying proactive, patient, and attentive is the most effective way to protect lives on the road.
