Foley shelter offers warmth and safety during cold snap

Cold Weather Shelter

The Baldwin County Emergency Management Agency (EMA) has announced the opening of a Safer Place shelter to provide warmth and safety as winter weather approaches. The shelter, located at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, 506 N. Pine St., Foley, AL, will open Sunday, January 19, at 5:00 PM and remain available until Wednesday, January 22, at noon.

Residents and visitors seeking shelter are encouraged to bring essential items such as blankets, pillows, medications, and other necessities. For assistance, individuals can contact the shelter at 251-256-8202.

The Baldwin County EMA, in collaboration with Voluntary Organizations Active in Disaster (VOAD), has coordinated resources to support the community during this time. With winter conditions being uncommon in the region, officials are emphasizing safety and preparedness.

The EMA advises residents to take the following precautions during the cold weather:

  • Avoid Travel: Stay off icy roads, especially bridges and overpasses.
  • Prepare Your Home: Keep extra blankets, flashlights, and batteries available. Use space heaters safely.
  • Protect Pipes: Insulate pipes and let faucets drip to prevent freezing.
  • Care for Pets: Bring pets indoors to keep them safe and warm.
  • For those who must travel, drivers are urged to reduce speed, brake gently, and avoid cruise control on icy roads.

The Baldwin County Highway Department is monitoring road conditions and will deploy sand to address hazardous areas.

The EMA encourages residents to stay updated through the National Weather Service and Baldwin County alerts. To receive notifications, visit Alert Baldwin. Updates are also available on the EMA’s social media platforms.
