Five Injured as Boat Hits Barge in Orange Beach

Gulf Shores News Boating Accident On Intercoastal Canal

According to Orange Beach Deputy Chief Jeff Smith, a boat approximately 24-foot long was carrying five passengers when it struck a parked barge in the Intracoastal Waterway. The accident has left two individuals in critical condition and three others injured.


The two passengers who were critically injured in the crash were airlifted by helicopters to Sacred Heart Hospital. The nature and extent of their injuries are not known at this time.


Three other passengers were taken by Medstar to South Baldwin Regional Medical Center. Details about their injuries and current condition have not been released.


Authorities are investigating the cause of the accident. It is unclear at this time whether factors such as speed, alcohol, or negligence played a role in the crash. The identity of the boat's operator and the passengers has not been revealed.

A bar with a history of being at odds with Gulf Shores city officials is going back before the city council asking permission to stay open until 3 a.m. After consulting with the police department, city staff is recommending the council deny the conditional use permit required by 'Hibas' in the Pelican Place shopping center. The matter will be one of the items on the Gulf Shores City Council work session agenda for June 16.
