Holk Was First Pilot To Land At Foley Airport in 1967

Foley officials will dedicate the city’s airport this afternoon in honor of former Mayor Arthur Holk, who led the community for two decades and helped guide its growth. The airport will now be known as Holk Field at Foley Municipal Airport, recognizing Holk’s years of public service and his early role in the city's aviation. City leaders, Holk’s relatives, and residents are expected to gather for the ceremony at the airport, which sits a short drive from the Gulf beaches. The event will also mark the installation of a new sign featuring the updated name.
The dedication is set for this afternoon, Friday, Jan. 16, at 2 p.m. at the Foley Municipal Airport. City officials said the public is welcome to attend the event honoring the longtime mayor.
The Foley City Council voted in 2025 to name the facility Holk Field at Foley Municipal Airport, formally tying Holk’s name to the airfield he helped champion. The change recognizes his long record in city government and his connection to the airport’s early days.
Holk served five terms on the Foley City Council from 1952 until 1972 before being elected mayor. He then served five terms as mayor from 1976 to 1996, overseeing Foley during a period of steady growth in Baldwin County.
Holk also played a special part in the airport’s history. He was the first pilot to land an airplane at the new Foley Municipal Airport when it opened in 1967, underscoring his interest in aviation and local transportation.
Holk died in 2021, but city officials said his influence on Foley endures. The new name is intended to keep his memory in front of residents and visitors who pass through the airport.
The ceremony will include Holk’s family members, city officials, and community residents who want to recognize his service. During the event, participants will also help dedicate a new sign displaying the name Holk Field at Foley Municipal Airport.
Holk Field at the Foley Municipal Airport is located at 510 Airport Drive near Underwood Road, also known as Baldwin County 24. The facility sits about five miles from the Tanger Outlet Center and about 15 miles from the Gulf beaches, making it a convenient gateway to the coastal region.
