City of Gulf Shores Seeks Local Input For Rebuild of Kids Park

Resident's input is sought for park upgrade

Gulf Shores Park Upgrade

Originally the Gulf Shores kids park was designed by the local children and custom-built by over 1,500 volunteers in less than six days in 1996. After 30 years of smiles and use the park has been showing it's age.

The City of Gulf Shores is launching Reimagine Kids Park, a  community‑driven initiative to thoughtfully rebuild the beloved wooden playground at Johnnie  Sims Park. A generation which grew up using the park can join a new generation in designing a family centerpiece for the city.

Guided by residents’ strong connection to the charm and character of the original design, the  City is embarking on a full redesign that honors the spirit of the park while creating a modern,  safe, and imaginative space for today’s children. Leathers & Associates will lead the design  process beginning this spring, incorporating ideas from families, students, and community  members.

As part of this community‑driven design phase, the City invites the public to attend Come Play  with Us!, a family‑friendly engagement event scheduled for Saturday, April 25, from 9 a.m. to  11 a.m., at the existing Kids Park at Johnnie Sims Park.

The event will feature fun activities for children, including a drawing station where young  participants can share their own “dream park” ideas. Adults will have opportunities to complete a  brief survey and offer input on features and priorities for the new playground. Additional  festivities will include music, face painting, games, snow cones, and cotton candy.

“This is truly a community‑driven project,” said Grant Brown, Director of Recreation & Cultural  Affairs. “We want a park that reflects the creativity and needs of our families, and this event  gives everyone an opportunity to share their ideas. The input we receive will play a major role in  designing a space our children can enjoy for years to come.”

Residents who are unable to attend in person will still have the opportunity to participate through  an online town hall platform, where they can complete surveys, view design previews, and  submit questions or comments. The platform can be accessed at: www.gulfshoresal.gov/kidspark

Construction on the new Kids Park is expected to begin in September, with the grand opening  planned for November. The project is part of the City’s 2026 Capital Plan and reflects its  commitment to creating vibrant, meaningful public spaces for all who call Gulf Shores home.
