Locals and visitors to Orange Beach will have the opportunity to start the new year outdoors with a guided First Day Hike at Gulf State Park. Park naturalists will lead the event and is suitable for all ages. Organizers say the hike will follow a paved, easy-to-walk path. It also provides several spots for families to pause and enjoy the scenery along the way.

The First Day Hike will take place at 9 a.m. on January 1. Participants will gather at the Orange Beach Sportsplex before heading out on the trail. The walk will travel down the Twin Bridges section of the Hugh S. Branyon Backcountry Trail. Hikers will finish the route at the Butterfly Garden on Catman Trail.

According to park staff, the hike is a two-mile round-trip on a paved trail. This makes it suitable for young children, older adults, and anyone who wants a relaxed pace. Naturalists will guide the group and may point out plants, birds, and other wildlife seen along the way. Families are encouraged to bring water and dress for the weather.

The final stop at the Butterfly Garden will provide children with an opportunity to play. Kids can climb on boulders placed in the garden area. The entire group can also make use of the screened-in picnic space. 

The starting point for the hike is the Orange Beach Sportsplex Hugh Branyon trailhead, located at 4385 William Silvers Parkway. This access point connects directly to the Twin Bridges portion of the trail system. Parking is available at the Sportsplex so participants can leave their vehicles there during the event. Signs will help guide visitors to the correct meeting area.
