New Grocer Takes Over Winn-Dixie In Foley

Winn-Dixie of Foley becomes a new Corner Market

Corner Market in Foley, Alabama

Winn-Dixie has been part of Alabama for decades. The company's roots trace back to 1925, and the modern Winn-Dixie Stores, Inc. was formed in 1955 through the merger of Winn & Lovett and Dixie Home Stores. This merger expanded the company to 117 stores and established its presence in five southeastern states, including Alabama.

Now the last stores in Alabama are changing ownership and locally the Foley location has become a Corner Market.

This month the ownership group stated "Corner Market is now open in Foley! Visit us at 1235 S McKenzie St for fresh food, friendly service and all your everyday essentials. Come see what’s new in your neighborhood!"

Corner Markets are owned by Roberts Company Inc., a third-generation, family-owned grocery business that started with Sunflower Market in 1968, with current leadership including David Roberts (President) and Eli Popicg (new President/CFO) overseeing the expansion and modernization of their chain of Corner Markets and Grocery Depot stores across the south.

According to their website, the majority of Corner Markets stores are in Mississippi and Foley is their first location in Alabama.

Price Mabry, vice president of sales and marketing stated that Corner Market doesn’t have an online option with third-party delivery services, such as DoorDash or Uber Eats, so people have to come to the store. “We go back again and again to produce being so important,” he says. “Quality and seasonality are so important.”
