Trail Transforms Underused Space, Wins Award

Gulf Shores area news

The Wilbourne Antique Rose Trail has been recognized by the state for its positive impact on the community. Main Street Alabama awarded the project the Planning and Public Space Award of Excellence at its recent banquet.

The award honors the transformation of an unused parking area into a walkway that connects the two sections of the Rose Trail. The Wilbourne Antique Rose Trail, established in 2007, winds through downtown Foley along the path of a former railroad line. It boasts a 1.5-mile northern section filled with antique roses, native plants, and grasses, along with a shorter southern section.

The new walkway, located between East Laurel and East Orange Avenues, seamlessly connects these sections, improving the visitor experience. Businesses near the trail have reported a rise in foot traffic since the connection opened.

Foley Main Street Honors Local Hero

The banquet also recognized local heroes, with Chad Watkins, president of Foley Main Street since 2018, being named the organization's Hero for 2023-24. Watkins has been instrumental in guiding the program's development and is a consistent top sponsor.

Darrelyn Dunmore, Executive Director of Foley Main Street, commended Watkins for his dedication and leadership. She highlighted his expertise in landscape design, which has been crucial in enhancing various downtown projects. "Chad is a strong supporter of Downtown Foley and me," Dunmore said, underscoring his commitment to the community's progress.

Main Street Alabama Celebrates Revitalization

Sponsored by the Alabama Municipal Electric Authority and the University of West Alabama's Division of Economic Development and Workforce Development, Main Street Alabama's annual banquet recognized achievements of projects and individuals throughout the state. Main Street Alabama President Mary Helmer Wirth emphasized the impact of these efforts on both community spirit and economic growth.

Main Street Alabama is a non-profit organization dedicated to revitalizing downtowns and neighborhood commercial districts across the state. With a focus on historic preservation and economic development, the organization currently supports 33 designated programs and 29 network communities, all working to foster local development.

Foley Main Street, accredited by Main Street America, continues to strengthen the economic vitality of Downtown Foley by supporting local businesses and attracting new investments. For more information on their initiatives, visit
