Each August is the reenactment of the Battle of Mobile Bay

Fort Morgan History

The Fort Morgan State Historic Site at the western tip of Pleasure Island is set to host the annual commemoration of the Battle of Mobile Bay. The historical reenactment takes place from Friday, August 4th to Sunday, August 6th, 2023. The reenactment is steeped in history and tradition.

The Fort Morgan Historical invites reenactors and living historians to occupy the Civil War bastion, offering a unique opportunity to step back in time and experience a slice of American history.

A Glimpse into the Past

The Battle of Mobile Bay was a significant naval clash during the American Civil War that took place on August 5, 1864. The Union Admiral David Farragut led his fleet past the Confederate defenses of Fort Morgan and engaged the Confederate fleet led by Admiral Franklin Buchanan. The battle is famously associated with Admiral Farragut's command, "Damn the torpedoes, full speed ahead!" This event marked a turning point in the war, leading to the Union's control over one of the last significant Confederate ports still active in the Gulf of Mexico.

The Commemoration Event

In the spirit of historical accuracy, the impression of the event is mid to late Civil War, Confederate. Participants will garrison the fort on Friday and Saturday nights, with Morning Colors ceremoniously executed at 9:00 AM on Saturday. The day's activities will include drills inside the fort and the posting of sentries along the wall, relieved at regular intervals. There is also the possibility of a skirmish with Federal Scouts, adding an element of excitement to the proceedings.

Engaging with the Public

The event offers participants a chance to interact with numerous visitors and tourists, educating them about the historical significance of the site and the events that took place there. It's an excellent opportunity for history enthusiasts to immerse themselves in the past and for the younger generation to learn about the Civil War in an engaging and interactive way.

Fort Morgan’s Haunted History

Adding an element of intrigue to the historical significance of Fort Morgan, there are also tales of the fort being haunted. Visitors have reported eerie encounters with shadowy figures, strange mists, and unexplained noises. An oppressive feeling of dread is said to descend upon the fort, often right before the appearance of a male apparition. These chilling accounts suggest that the spirits of soldiers who lost their lives during the Civil War might still linger within the fort's walls. While these reports are largely anecdotal and unverifiable, they certainly add a layer of mystery to the fort and its storied past.

Fort Morgan’s haunting tales have even caught the attention of the popular TV show, Expedition X. In one of their episodes, the team, including adventurer Josh Gates, scientist Phil Torres, and paranormal researcher Jessica Chobot, investigated the reported supernatural encounters at the fort. Their exploration into the fort's ghostly phenomena further underscores the mysterious allure of this historic site.

Practical Information

Participants are advised to bring bedding or a cot as no tents are needed. They should also bring plenty of water and fluids for the entire weekend. While no campfires are allowed, an enclosed gas grill may be brought for cooking. For those who prefer to dine out, there are several restaurants a few miles up the road.

All modern items should be removed or hidden from sight throughout the day to maintain the authenticity of the historical setting. Fort Morgan is conveniently located 23 miles west of Gulf Shores, Alabama on State Highway 180. For those traveling from the West, the Mobile Bay Ferry from Dauphin Island provides an alternative route. For more information on the ferry's hours of operation and fees, call (251) 861-3000.

The 2023 Commemoration of the Battle of Mobile Bay promises to be a memorable event, offering a unique opportunity to experience a pivotal moment in American history. Whether you're a history buff, a reenactor, or simply looking for an interesting weekend activity, this event at Fort Morgan is not to be missed.

Tracking fish with sonar has been available to the public since 1948, when the famous Furuno brothers introduced the product in their native Japan. A 'salty' charter captain might add that it was Lowrance that brought it to the U.S. fishing market. But whomever you credit, NOAA has now combined it with artificial intelligence (AI) to provide better chart mapping and even fish count locations of fish in the gulf. The results could impact local fishing seasons in the future.
