The Fort Morgan State Historic Site at the western tip of Pleasure Island is set to host the annual commemoration of the Battle of Mobile Bay. The historical reenactment takes place from Friday, August 4th to Sunday, August 6th, 2023. The reenactment is steeped in history and tradition.

A Glimpse into the Past

The Battle of Mobile Bay was a significant naval clash during the American Civil War that took place on August 5, 1864. The Union Admiral David Farragut led his fleet past the Confederate defenses of Fort Morgan and engaged the Confederate fleet led by Admiral Franklin Buchanan. The battle is famously associated with Admiral Farragut's command, "Damn the torpedoes, full speed ahead!" This event marked a turning point in the war, leading to the Union's control over one of the last significant Confederate ports still active in the Gulf of Mexico.

The Commemoration Event

In the spirit of historical accuracy, the impression of the event is mid to late Civil War, Confederate. Participants will garrison the fort on Friday and Saturday nights, with Morning Colors ceremoniously executed at 9:00 AM on Saturday. The day's activities will include drills inside the fort and the posting of sentries along the wall, relieved at regular intervals. There is also the possibility of a skirmish with Federal Scouts, adding an element of excitement to the proceedings.

Practical Information

Participants are advised to bring bedding or a cot as no tents are needed. They should also bring plenty of water and fluids for the entire weekend. While no campfires are allowed, an enclosed gas grill may be brought for cooking. For those who prefer to dine out, there are several restaurants a few miles up the road.

All modern items should be removed or hidden from sight throughout the day to maintain the authenticity of the historical setting.
