In a press release from Superintendent Dr. Matt Akin, he stated the Gulf Shores City Schools is proud to announce its designation as an Apple Distinguished School District, a prestigious recognition awarded by Apple, Inc., for leadership in creating technology-rich learning environments that inspire creativity, foster collaboration, and personalize learning. The award will be presented on Thursday, January 30, at 9:00 a.m. in the Hangout Music Production Lab at Gulf Shores High School. Following the announcement, attendees will have the opportunity to tour classrooms and experience firsthand the innovative practices that earned this distinction.


This honor reflects Gulf Shores City Schools’ commitment to integrating cutting-edge technology into

aspect of teaching and learning. From elementary classrooms to high school programs, Apple technology

plays a pivotal role in empowering students and teachers to connect with the world, spark creativity, and

achieve academic excellence.


Superintendent Dr. Matt Akin highlighted the district’s transformative use of Apple products, stating:

"At Gulf Shores City Schools, Apple technology helps us connect students to the world in ways that fuel

their creativity, deepen collaboration, and make learning personal. From building electric cars and

producing music to multimedia storytelling and augmented reality experiences, our teachers and students

leverage these tools to unlock their full potential and thrive in a global, digital age."


As part of its innovation journey, Gulf Shores City Schools has implemented numerous forward-thinking

initiatives, such as:


• Music production lab at the high school, where students create professional-grade audio and

   video projects.

• Aviation Academy that begins with flight simulators in elementary school and concludes with

   building airplanes and offering pilot certification in high school.

• Coding and Robotics Programs beginning in elementary school, giving students hands-on

   experience with problem-solving and critical thinking skills.

• Interactive Science Labs utilizing iPads and laptops to measure and analyze water quality from

   local waterways and to help identify plant and insect species from Gulf State Park.

• Personalized Learning Platforms powered by Apple tools that allow students to set goals, track

   progress, and engage with content tailored to their unique needs.


The Apple Distinguished Schools program recognizes educational institutions that demonstrate

innovative leadership, robust technology integration, and measurable academic success. Gulf Shores City

Schools joins a select group of schools worldwide celebrated for creating dynamic, future-ready learning

environments. Gulf Shores City Schools is one of two Apple Distinguished School Districts in Alabama.

While snow is currently not in the Alabama coastal forecast, frigid and freezing temperatures are expected to start Friday evening. The National Weather Service in Mobile has declared an "Extreme Cold Watch" and does not forecast a low temp above 32° until Monday.
