$58K proposal for tower design and services to be reviewed

Gulf Shores Fire Rescue News

With only a two-item agenda on the slate for the Oct. 21 meeting of the Gulf Shores City Council, the panel will discuss a proposal on the design of a fire training tower at the city’s new fire training facility.

The council will meet at 4 p.m. in council chambers at city hall on Oct. 21.

“The Fire Training facility is being constructed on city-owned property at the west end of West 36th Avenue,” Construction Manager Clint Colvin wrote in a memo to the council. “The site work for the facility is nearing completion at this time.”

Gulf Shores will consider a proposal from Sawgrass Consulting for $58,200 to design the facility and other services including:

  • Training tower design
  • Bid document preparation and bidding assistance
  • Geotechnical services and construction testing
  • Inspection and reporting services

Gulf Shores gave a bid for building the center at the west end of West 36th Street to Asphalt Services for $1.8 million in January. Sawgrass Consulting is handling the construction engineering and inspection for the overall project as well.

To build the new fire training facility in Gulf Shores, the city had to buy wetland mitigation bank credits from the Army Corps of Engineers to fill in 1.03 acres of wetlands at the site.

“The Alabama Port Mitigation Bank provided a quote of $29,355 for the required 3.09 credits for the impacts to 1.03 acres of wetlands,” Colvin said in January. “The Engineering Department recommends authorization of this purchase per the terms of the Mitigation Bank.”

The only other item on the agenda is a proposal to amend parts of the zoning ordinance pertaining to sections on survey and elevation.
