The City of Gulf Shores is preparing to move forward with major improvements to pedestrian access and safety along West Beach Boulevard and West 11th Street. City officials say the project will create a safer, more connected path for walkers, runners, and cyclists in the West Beach area.

The work is primarily funded by an Alabama Department of Transportation (ALDOT) Transportation Alternatives Program grant awarded in November. The project involves building a ten-foot-wide concrete sidewalk and multi-use path, separated from the main roadway, from the West Lagoon Avenue intersection to West 11th Street.

An additional sidewalk project is also being considered for West 11th Street, from West Beach Boulevard to West Lagoon Avenue. City Council members approved a resolution on February 23, authorizing Civil Southeast, LLC, to manage Construction Engineering and Inspection services for the project. The company’s contract will not exceed $80,100.

The total cost of the project is estimated at $1,010,275. The ALDOT grant will cover 80% of the construction, design, and inspection costs, up to $800,000. The city has allocated $90,350 for design expenses in its 2026 fiscal year budget.

City leaders expect the design phase to be finished sometime in 2026. Construction is scheduled for 2027, once the project gets final approval from ALDOT. Officials said the improvements will help make Gulf Shores more accessible for all residents and visitors.

“We’re excited to continue investing in safer, more connected pedestrian routes for our community,” city officials said in a statement. The project is part of Gulf Shores’ ongoing effort to enhance mobility and promote outdoor activity in the growing beachside city.
