Applications for Student Council are Open Until August 20

Gulf Shores Junior City Council

The City of Gulf Shores is expanding its efforts to involve young people in local government as it launches the second year of its Junior City Council Program. The city is inviting high school students to apply for the program designed to build future leaders and encourage community engagement. Participants get to explore the workings of city government firsthand while making a difference in their own hometown. The Junior City Council is open to up to 15 students in grades 10 through 12 who live within Gulf Shores city limits.

The new program year will run from September through May, with applications open until August 20, 2025. Finalists will be interviewed the following week. During the nine-month program, students will attend monthly meetings, listen to guest speakers, and work together on meaningful community projects. They will also attend Gulf Shores City Council meetings and help plan activities that benefit residents.

Last year’s Junior City Council took the lead on organizing the Spring Market in Waterway Village. The event gathered residents along with vendors and artists, showing the positive impact students can have when given the chance to lead projects. Gulf Shores Mayor Robert Craft said he was proud to see the energy and creativity the students brought in their first year. He believes their work, especially at the Spring Market, is a sign of how much they care about their city.

Officials say the program is looking for students who show leadership, have strong communication skills, and want to serve their community. The goal is to help students feel more connected to local government and learn what it takes to keep a city running smoothly. The Junior City Council offers a unique opportunity for teens to learn, give back, and gain experience that could help them in the future.

Anyone interested in the program can find more information and an application on the City of Gulf Shores’ official
website. Questions about the program can be directed to Lindsey Hart, the Public Engagement Manager, at 251-968-4301 or lhart@gulfshoresal.gov

Gulf Shores, located on the scenic Gulf Coast, is known as a family-friendly beach community and strives to be a great place to live, work, and visit. The Junior City Council is just one way the city hopes to inspire young people to take an active role in their community.
