Volunteers needed for restoration project

Gulf Shores environmental news

Local organizations in Orange Beach, Alabama, are reaching out to residents and visitors for help. They aim to restore the lower Perdido Islands. Three groups are leading the charge. The Pensacola and Perdido Bays Estuary Program, the City of Orange Beach, and The Nature Conservancy in Alabama are partnering up.

This volunteer planting event will happen on Walker Island. It is scheduled for Thursday, July 31, from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. Organizers will supply all tools needed. They will also provide transportation to and from the island.

Supplies and boat space are limited. That means advance registration is required. Anyone aged 7 or older can join. Volunteers under 16 must come with a parent or guardian.

Those who are 17 can participate alone. But they require a signed waiver from a parent or legal guardian. Safety is a top priority for everyone. Organizers want a positive experience for all.

New volunteers with the Pensacola and Perdido Bays Estuary Program should
set up an account first. Use their volunteer portal for that. Then, sign up for the event on the website.

If help is needed with registration, email
info@ppbep.org. The team is ready to assist. Planting native species will strengthen the shoreline. It will also create better homes for birds, fish, and other animals.

This event lets the community make a real impact. Locals and visitors who care about nature are welcome. Organizers expect a good turnout. The work will reduce erosion and provide food and shelter for wildlife.

Restoring Walker Island fits into bigger plans. These efforts preserve the Perdido Islands and the surrounding ecosystem. Such projects keep the area beautiful for future generations. They ensure unique wildlife and views stay protected.

Spots may fill up fast. Community members should sign up soon. This is a chance to protect the environment together. Everyone's help counts in this important cause.
