Gulf Shores Junior City Council

Gulf Shores, Ala. — (GSN) — While some schools around the nation have cut civics classes, Gulf Shores invites high school students to experience hands-on city government firsthand. The City of Gulf Shores has officially opened applications for its 2026–2027 Junior City Council program, offering local youth a practical foundation in municipal governance.

Designed for high school students in grades 10 through 12, the initiative bridges classroom learning with real-world public service. Through direct participation, selected students will learn how local municipal decisions are made, build essential leadership competencies, and collaborate on real projects that benefit the Gulf Shores community.

The city will select up to 15 qualified students to serve on the council for the upcoming term, which runs from September through May. To be eligible, applicants must reside within the city limits of Gulf Shores.

Throughout the nine-month program, participants will:

  • Meet on a monthly basis to hear directly from municipal guest speakers.
  • Collaborate on hands-on civic projects designed to benefit Gulf Shores.
  • Attend official City Council meetings and participate in broader community initiatives.

The program is seeking applicants who demonstrate strong leadership abilities, effective communication skills, and a clear commitment to serving others.

Leadership Insights

Mayor Robert Craft emphasized the importance of the initiative in developing civic leadership and guiding the city's future.

"The Junior City Council plays a vital role in shaping the future of our community by connecting students directly with city leadership," Craft said. "Each year, our student leaders bring fresh ideas, thoughtful perspectives, and a determined commitment to making Gulf Shores an even better place to live".

Craft added that the enthusiasm demonstrated by student participants each year provides great encouragement for municipal leaders. "Their enthusiasm reminds us that our community's future is bright, and we are proud to support their growth as young civic leaders," he said.

Application Process & Inquiries

Applications for the Junior City Council will be accepted through Friday, August 28, 2026. Finalist interviews will take place during the week following the deadline.
