Labor Day Has Special Meaning To The Coast

The end of one season and the start of another

Labor Day was originally founded to celebrate American workers of all skills. It has several meanings for locals along the coast. It has been the official end of the summer beach season, yet is also is the start of Fall Festival season. But today we remember all of the hard working residents that keep our famous family oriented beach community running.

THE HISTORY:

The first Labor Day holiday was celebrated on Tuesday, September 5, 1882, in New York City, in accordance with the plans of the Central Labor Union. The Central Labor Union held its second Labor Day holiday just a year later, on September 5, 1883.

By 1894, 23 more states had adopted the holiday, and on June 28, 1894, President Grover Cleveland signed a law making the first Monday in September of each year a national holiday.

With the inventions of robotic, AI and other technologies it is more important that ever to celebrate the US labor force. American labor has raised the nation’s standard of living and contributed to the greatest production the world has ever known and the labor movement has brought us closer to the realization of our traditional ideals of economic and political democracy. It is appropriate, therefore, that the nation pays tribute on Labor Day to the creator of so much of the nation's strength, freedom, and leadership – the American worker.

Dolphins or Porpoises: Which Do You See In Local Waters

Visitors to the Alabama Gulf Coast often spot marine mammals swimming near shore or alongside boats. Many people call these animals porpoises but you only have to look at our high school mascot to know the answer. According to salty fishermen and NOAA Fisheries, the animals seen in local waters are dolphins.
