Make-A-Wish Alabama has launched a new campaign designed to turn Alabama roadways into moving symbols of hope. The nonprofit organization is encouraging drivers to support children with critical illnesses through a specialty license plate program. Leaders say the effort connects everyday travel with meaningful impact. Each tag represents support for families across the state.

The campaign was officially announced in Birmingham on January 26, 2026. Make-A-Wish Alabama is seeking approval to produce a specialty license plate that will fund wish-granting efforts statewide. The organization must secure 1,000 pre-commitments before production can begin. Supporters can complete the process online through the official campaign website.

Each specialty plate will contribute directly to Make-A-Wish Alabama’s mission. Of the purchase price, $41.50 from every plate will go toward granting wishes for children facing critical illnesses. The funds will support wish experiences for families in communities throughout Alabama. Organizers say even a single plate can make a difference.

“Seeing these plates on highways and backroads across Alabama will be a powerful reminder of the hope our community creates when we come together,” said Tracy Bennett Smith, president and chief executive officer of Make-A-Wish Alabama. She said each tag represents joy and anticipation for children awaiting their wishes. Smith added that community participation is essential to the campaign’s success.

Make-A-Wish Alabama is also known for hosting its annual kids' fishing tournament at The Wharf in Orange Beach. The event gives wish children a day on the water alongside volunteers and community members. Organizers say the tournament reflects the organization’s focus on creating joyful experiences beyond individual wishes.

Drivers who pre-commit must pay a $50 fee to reserve their plate. That amount will be applied to the registration cost once the tags are manufactured. Participants will continue to use their current Alabama license plate until renewal. The pre-commitment process is designed to be simple and accessible.

The first 500 supporters to pre-commit will receive a commemorative keychain. The keychain features the Make-A-Wish Alabama license plate design. Organization leaders say the keepsake is a small way to thank early supporters. The incentive is meant to encourage quick participation.

“This campaign is about more than just a license plate,” Smith said. “It’s about seeing hope carried down every street and interstate across Alabama.” She said the organization believes visibility will inspire continued support for wish-granting efforts. Leaders hope the tags will become a recognizable symbol statewide.
