Steve Irwin opened eyes about animal conservation

gulf shores area news

Like us, he loved aquatic wildlife and outdoor adventures.

It’s only fitting those lucky enough to live along Lower Alabama’s Gulf Coast and enjoy it natural amenities should take a moment to remember another nature lover on International Steven Irwin Day. After all, he loved nature just as much as we do.

But did you know November 15th wasn’t Steve Irwin’s birthday? The date to honor his legacy was chosen because it was the birthday of Irwin’s favorite pet, Harriet, the Galapagos land tortoise that lived to be 175 years old. (Here’s another fun fact: Harriet was so old, she once belonged to Charles Darwin.)

Through his television series, "The Crocodile Hunter," Steve Irwin took viewers on thrilling adventures, but his contributions to wildlife conservation were as significant as his entertainment career. With his larger-than-life personality and unwavering commitment to wildlife, he has inspired countless individuals to embrace and protect the world around us.

Although Irwin tragically passed away in 2006, his legacy endures. His family, including his wife Terri and their children Bindi and Robert, have continued his mission and expanded his wildlife conservation efforts.

And so can you, right here at home. Get involved by visiting our local zoo and wildlife sanctuaries, or simply taking a moment to appreciate the sandy white dunes that surround us. Here’s a list of local places to visit and support on Steve Irwin Day (and every other day of the year for that matter).
