Orange Beach Fire and Rescue Remind Drivers of Distracted Driving

The PSA is a timely reminder as summer season approaches

Distracted Driving

During bumper to bumper summer traffic or faster moving congestion on the expressway, distracted driving has become an almost daily problem. Orange Beach Fire Rescue reminded local residents that this is National Distracted Driving Awareness Month.

Thousands of drivers die each year due to distractions. the OBFR reminded the public "Every time we take our eyes off the road—even for a few seconds—we put lives at risk. Our crews see firsthand how quickly a moment of distraction can turn into a life-changing emergency."

A few facts from the Orange Beach Fire Rescue:

  • About 9 people are killed every day in crashes involving distracted driving in the U.S.
  • Sending or reading a text takes your eyes off the road for about 5 seconds — at 55 mph, that’s like driving the length of a football field blindfolded
  • By driving distracted, you’re robbing yourself of seconds that you may need to avoid a close call or deadly crash.

Some tips from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration include:

  • Need to send a text? Pull over and park your car in a safe location.
  • Designate your passenger as your “designated texter” to respond to calls or messages.
  • Do not scroll through apps while driving. Struggling not to text and drive? Put the cell phone in the trunk, glove box, or back seat of the vehicle until you arrive at your destination.

Distractions aren’t just texting. They include eating, adjusting music, talking to passengers, or using apps.

This campaign reminds drivers of the deadly dangers and the legal consequences – including fines – of texting behind the wheel.
