Severe Weather Preparedness Sales Tax Holiday Starts Today

Living in southern Baldwin County is paradise the majority of the days. However, there are times that we need to be prepared for adverse weather conditions. With that in mind, the State of Alabama allows residents a weekend of "Tax Free" purchases so they may stock up on those items needed during the storms.


During Alabama’s annual Severe Weather Preparedness Sales Tax Holiday, no state sales or use tax is due on certain items you may purchase to deal with severe weather (Act 2012-256, Rule 810-6-3-.66). The sales tax holiday takes place on the last full weekend of February, starting at 12:01 a.m. on Friday and ending at midnight on Sunday. A county or municipality, by resolution or ordinance adopted at least 30 days prior to the last full weekend of February, may provide for the exemption of covered items from county or municipal sales or use taxes during the same time period, under the same terms, conditions, and definitions as provided for the state sales tax holiday.

A bar with a history of being at odds with Gulf Shores city officials is going back before the city council asking permission to stay open until 3 a.m. After consulting with the police department, city staff is recommending the council deny the conditional use permit required by 'Hibas' in the Pelican Place shopping center. The matter will be one of the items on the Gulf Shores City Council work session agenda for June 16.
