Huntsville may be the headquarters but Gulf Shores will be the playground

Gulf Shores News

You have probably heard that the U.S. Space Command Headquarters are going to be in Huntsville, Alabama. It is anticipated to create over 30,000 jobs and significant investment in the "Rocket City" and those high income employees will be seeking a place to vacation.

The U.S. Space Command is responsible for military operations beyond Earth's atmosphere, or about 62 miles up and higher – the internationally recognized boundary of space known as the Kármán Line. That includes defending U.S. satellites from potential threats.

The recent decision will have future impacts on the Huntsville market but the next biggest impact could be made at the beach. Not only will the center bring the estimated 30,000 employees and their families, there are all of the suppliers and meetings that will come to the State of Alabama. What better place to conduct a meeting and invite attendees to bring their families.

The convention and small meeting business has become a large part of the year-round tourism goals. We have seen development of meeting facilities in recent years and the groups have booked the space in advance.

Huntsville, home to NASA's Marshall Space Flight Center and a major hub for defense contractors, has long lobbied for the Space Command headquarters. Now the beach can become the getaway for all the engineers, astrophysicist and others connected to the new Space Command.

Some experts estimate the move could result in a $30 billion to $40 billion economic boost over the next two decades, including hundreds of billions of dollars in investments for the state. Huntsville is already home to several key institutions, including:

  • NASA's Marshall Space Flight Center, which developed the Saturn V rockets.
  • U.S. Army Aviation and Missile Command (AMCOM).
  • U.S. Army Space and Missile Defense Command.
  • The Missile Defense Agency.
