Numerous local units responded to State Park fire
First responders from numerous south Baldwin agencies responded to a fire in the Gulf State Park on Tuesday. The center of the flames were contained to the Gulf Shores side of the park but Fire and Rescue Departments from the coastal communities and State resources battled the flames to protect the residents, environment and local businesses.
There is a reason local first responders sometimes train together and have common communication resources. Tuesday's actions, containment and communication to the public was an optimal display of how it should be managed.
Interoperability - the coordinated efforts of police, fire, EMS, and other emergency services to manage incidents effectively.
At approximately 1:30 PM Chief Phillips from the Gulf Shores Fire and Rescue received notice of the incident. Officials stated that a downed power line initially stated the blaze.
Hal Scheurich and his Fox10 news team was able to summarize the situation with local officals:
Detective Carl Wittstruck of the Gulf Shores Police stated that traffic had to be rerouted during the fire. He added that buildings within the proximity of the fire had been evacuated as a precaution.
The fire was officially contained by 7:30 PM and has damaged approximately 117 acres.
The fire is believed to have started by a tree falling on a powerline located near the rear access of Waterville.
Due to the location, several State Park and Gulf Shores roadways were closed during the afternoon hours.
The cooperation between First Responders is credited for the minimal damage and zero fatalities.
