Four victims on two boats were saved from rough waters and low visibility

When you dread seeing marine police approaching your boat remember that their advice or citation may be saving lives before a tragedy occurs. When accidents occur they are the ones who provide the urgent help you may need. This was the case for two ALEA officers assisting local boaters.

Troopers Jacob Manning and Kenny Wade of the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency’s (ALEA) Marine Patrol Division have been recognized with the Alabama State Troopers Association (ASTA) Trooper of the Year Award for 2024. The honor comes in recognition of their bravery and professionalism during a rescue operation in Perdido Bay.

In October 2024, Troopers Manning and Wade responded to a distress call reporting two capsized vessels in Perdido Bay. Four individuals—two adults and two children—were left stranded in the water, facing not only the immediate dangers of hypothermia, but also the threat posed by low visibility and severe weather conditions.

Despite these obstacles, Manning and Wade acted swiftly. Navigating through rough waters and poor visibility, they were able to locate and safely rescue all four victims.

“Troopers Manning and Wade’s heroic actions exemplify the highest standards of law enforcement. Their quick thinking, teamwork, and unwavering dedication to public safety saved lives and serve as an inspiration to us all,” said ALEA Secretary Hal Taylor.

The ASTA Trooper of the Year Award is one of the highest honors bestowed upon Alabama state troopers, reserved for those who demonstrate exceptional courage, professionalism, and service above self. Manning and Wade’s actions during the Perdido Bay rescue operation have been widely praised by ALEA leadership and the broader community.

Manning and Wade’s recognition as Troopers of the Year serves as an inspiration to their colleagues and a reminder of the vital role law enforcement plays in safeguarding the community, especially in moments of crisis.
