Orange Beach, Ala. — (GSN) — Overnight lane restrictions are planned on a busy stretch of Orange Beach Boulevard as the city works on an underground sewer line. The work will affect drivers heading south on Highway 161 just south of City Hall. Motorists are asked to slow down and exercise extra caution in the area. City officials say the temporary changes are necessary to allow crews to safely complete the project.

According to the city, Orange Beach Boulevard/Highway 161 will be reduced to one southbound lane from approximately midnight to 7 a.m. on Monday, April 20th. During those overnight hours, crews and a contractor will be working in and around an existing sewer line beneath the roadway. The lane reduction is expected to last only that night, as long as conditions allow.

While southbound drivers will be funneled into a single lane, both northbound lanes are expected to remain open through the work zone. City officials say keeping northbound traffic moving in two lanes should help reduce delays. Even so, drivers are urged to allow a little extra travel time and be prepared for changing traffic patterns.

The Orange Beach Sewer Department has arranged for a contractor to handle the overnight sewer work. Crews will be in the roadway and along the shoulder, using equipment near moving traffic. Therefore, the city is reminding motorists to pay attention to cones, signs, and any directions from workers on the scene.

An Orange Beach police officer will be present on-site during the project to assist with traffic control. The officer's role will be to direct drivers through the narrowed section of the road and to help ensure public safety while the lane is reduced. Officials state that police presence is intended to protect both motorists and construction workers in the area.

City officials expect the work to be finished and all lanes reopened by 7 a.m. Monday, if everything goes as planned. They are asking drivers to watch their speed and “please drive safely around work crews” as they pass through the area. In a statement, the city said it appreciates everyone’s patience and understanding as the Sewer Department completes this work.
