Historic snowfall beats record from 1895

Gulf Shores Weather News

It is officially time to thaw out in Gulf Shores. After the historic snowfall that crushed the old record from 1895, residents want to soak up the sun and remember why they came to this piece of paradise. The National Weather Service in Mobile is forecasting sunny skies and a balmy 44° to be the high temperature.

Don't rush out to explore this morning. Local law enforcement has stated that ice will still be on the roads until the sun has had time to warm the surface. Gulf Shores area is forecasted to be above freezing temps after 11AM.

Many local businesses are stating they will be opening between the noon to 1PM times. So if you find yourself in the mood to end hibernation and view the sun please drive slow and be very careful walking. Spotty ice is common in shaded areas.

So how much snow did Gulf Shores obtain during the storm? Officials are stating more than 8 inches and some locals have reported more that 10 inches accumulated on their lawns. While it does not compare to those in the upper peninsula of Michigan, it was memorable for our Small Town with a Big Beach.

Here are a few tips for driving after a snow storm has passed from Car & Driver:

  • Drive smoothly and slowly
  • Leave plenty of space between cars
  • Remember that cars may slide on ice when stopping
  • Plan ahead
