Commandments pass as legislative session ends

On the final day of the 2026 legislative session, Alabama’s House of Representatives passed a bill requiring the Ten Commandments to be hung in certain public school classrooms. The bill, SB99, will now go to Governor Ivey's desk to be signed into law.
The bill requires fifth-through-twelfth grade classrooms where United States history is taught to hang a poster at least 11 inches by 14 inches in size. The layout and the design of the poster needs to be approved by the State Superintendent of Education.
Senate Bill 99 passed with majority support in the House, with a combination of the republican caucus and a few members of the democratic caucus.
“This is not about religion in public school it’s about a recognition of education of what founded and what were basic principles of this nation’s founding, so it’s not taking away from anyone’s else’s belief system, this is who we are as Americans, and we can’t change that,” said Rep. Mark Gidley (R-Gadsen).
